Nacra @NYC – April 29, 2:30p

Fun races again today as Gia, Moon, Palani and Liev with crew Beatrice join me for our NACRA races. Amy also joined, and crewed for Moon. Congrats to Gia for making a clean sweep, scoring three brilliant come-from-behind wins.

Weather on the Blake Sea was so-so, alternating the good with some squalls affecting part of the fleet. Everyone finished in all the races though, except in race 1, where Liev had to retire after falling overboard leaving his poor crew to linger on the boat for a while. For some weird reason, the line had not picked up his boat at start either.

In race 1, Moon started well, rounding the first mark ahead, but he struggled in the next downwind as Palani and Gia passed him and Amy. Palani seemed en route to a victory but Gia caught him in the last reach leg, passing inside at the last mark, for a tight finish.

Race 2 started a bit similarly, with Moon and Palani crossing together for a near perfect start. Gia was not far behind while Liev and Beatrice took time to get started. Moon established a solid lead while Gia was busy attacking then passing Palani. At mark 2, Moon was ahead but Gia was on a roll and caught him in the next reach, taking advantage of her swifter acceleration after rounding the mark. She took enough of a lead to not let Moon back in the final run. Well done again!

As all sailed so well and fast, we had time for an extra race: 923, a quick back n’ forth reaching speedster. Moon again was first across the line, with Liev and Bea close behind. Palani and Gia were a bit delayed as they started together 20 seconds later. At mark 1, Liev was leading, Moon a close second, while Gia had passed Palani. The order remained the same until mark 2, with Liev leading Moon, and Gia catching up, with Palani in tow. The third leg was decisive: Moon hit a squall and lost some time, opening the door for the next two. Gia accelerated and took the lead at mark 3. Behind her, the fleet got tighter, with very little gaps between the 3 pursuers. Liev managed to hang tough to his 2nd spot while Moon sneaked by a surprised Palani on the line!

Thanks to all for coming to sail and providing such an exciting show. I hope to see more of you next week. Cheers !
